Leland Parks and Recreation has won an award from the state for innovative programming. Leland Parks and Recreation won the award based on their program titled “The Leland We Don’t Know”. Parks and recreation manager Neil Brooks said, “We took folks from the older part of town, long time residents, and then folks from the newer parts of town - a lot of the folks from the newer developments that we have along 17 and other places in town and got those folks together on some bus tours around town. That way they could learn about different parts of the community that they might not be so familiar with.” The program will add more bus tours to meet the demand since the program was so popular there is now a waiting list. “We want to make sure that they keep the turkey cold at all times, so either thaw in the refrigerator or in a sink of cold water. Then once it’s thawed, put it back in the refrigerator if you used the cold water method. But that’s a real popular question. It’s really important to make sure it’s thawed, because then it will cook properly.”

The run will be held on Thanksgiving day beginning at the YMCA on Market Street in Wilmington. There will be music, special prizes, and fun throughout the morning . Race results and award ceremony will be held at the finish line. Trophies will again be a unique must-see! Finish line food and refreshments will be provided to all racers. The entry fee is $20 before November 6, and $25 afterwards, and includes a unique long-sleeved T-shirt. The Turkey Trot is one of the largest Thanksgiving Day events around the country and is one of the most fun ways to begin Thanksgiving Day. The 2.4 Mile Turkey Trot around the Loop at Wrightsville Beach and the 1 Mile or 2.4 Mile Gobbler Family Fun Walk is designed to accommodate everyone. On-site registration in the rear of the Park begins at 7:30am. All proceeds will benefit the Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity. This Sunday the Seaside Shuffle will take place at Wrightsville Beach. The women’s 5K will start at 1pm with the men’s 5K following at 1:45pm. The course is TAC/USA certified.
